The Struggles Of Being Teachers

I think there are multiple reasons for teacher burnout. First of all, as seen in the film, the scores of the students are used to measure the teacher's job performance. Indirectly student testing is testing the teachers. Also seen in the film Teach is the disconnect and lack of honest communication between teachers and students. When reviewing the scores some of the teachers, like Shelby, state that they watch their students do problems they've done correctly in class many times before answer incorrectly while taking the test. Both of these factors are examples of the type of stress that teacher's face mentioned in the article Empirically Derived Profiles of Teacher Stress, Burnout, Self-Efficacy, and Coping and Associated Student Outcomes. Work stress damages the well being of the teacher and results in a worsening relationship between teacher and student and decreases the teacher's ability to perform their jobs(Herman et al, 91).
To prevent teacher burnout i think teachers need an available support system and must reach out to whomever that includes. In the film Teach, Lindsey discusses a new plan of action with her principle. With his support they decide to reteach the information the students have already learned instead of moving past it to finish the school year on track. In What Makes Teachers Thrive? by Susan Moore Johnson, published by Education Week, she emphasis the need of support behind a good teacher. She states "we have found that working in an effectively organized school is what matters- and not only to new teachers. All teachers benefit when schools offer collegial interactions, opportunities for growth, appropriate assignments, adequate resources, and schoolwide structures to support student learning"(Johnson).  I think we tend to underestimate the effect of an environment on an individuals ability to thrive, emotionally and educationally, students and teachers. From my own experience, i know that a positive environment allows youth to be comfortable asking questions, to locate their personal interest, and to grow. This is hard for a teacher to create in his or her classroom when it is not surrounded by resources that reflect his or her classroom goals.
